Strike Update:ASUU To End Strike Next Week, Signs MOU With FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is ready to call off its industrial action after 5 months and 10 days of protesting against the Federal Government. The decision came after the Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Federal Government on Wednesday evening in Abuja. The Union was represented by its Chairman, Nasir Fagge, while the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, stood in for the government. Both confirmed the news to State House correspondents.

ASUU's demands were:

*a non-victimisation clause,
*proof of the payment of the N200bn into a
*Central Bank of Nigeria account for public
universities,
*a review of their agreement in 2014, beforethey call off the strike. Their demands were met by FG.

ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Faggae, now says ASUU would
make its position known to government "within one week",
after their National Executive meeting. According to
Faggae: "This is the response to the letter we wrote to Mr.
President and this document would now be forwarded to
our members and our members would give us direction. We
are hoping that we would be able to meet with our
members in less than a week. I don't have the power to call
off the industrial action, it is only our members that can do
that. And our members gave us a message to give to the
Federal Government which we have done and within one
week our members would meet. We already have the
document which shows that Government is committed".
