Ride Along Races To The Top Of The US Box Office With Record Opening

Keira Knightley's new film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit had a disappointing debut in the US over the weekend, with the thriller only managing a fourth place finish behind top spot entry Ride Along.

Ride Along, a cop comedy starring Kevin Hart and rapper Ice Cube (who also produced the movie), took an impressive $41.2m (£25m) in its first week of release. That number was well above it's predicted takings of $28m (£17m) and was the biggest debut on record for the three-day Martin Luther King holiday in the US.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, based on Tom Clancy's novel and also starring Chris Pine alongside Keira, finished in fourth place with a disappointing $17.2m (£10.4m).The thriller was beaten by animation Nut Job and Lone Survivor, last week's Mark Wahlberg starring chart topper which slipped to number two.

Pine follows big names Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford to take on Clancy's most well-known character with the new film seeing Ryan in his early years.

Following Thursday's Oscar nominations, heavily tipped films for the Best Picture prize have made a return to US cinemas with 12 Years a Slave and Gravity both having screenings over the weekend.

Rival for the Oscar, American Hustle also performed well, taking the sixth spot behind Disney's smash hit Frozen while August: Osage County and The Wolf of Wall Street also feature in the box office top 10.

Horror feature Devil's Due also debuted in the top ten, placing at number seven and earning $8.5m in ticket sales.
