Average time spent watching TV fell in 2013, data shows

Average TV viewing in the UK fell last year, according to industry figures.

People watched three hours, 55 minutes, and 30 seconds of TV per day in 2013, latest figures from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (Barb) show.

This was nine minutes per day less than 2012, when the Olympics boosted viewing, and some good weather in 2013 tempting more people away from TVs.

However, the television set remains overwhelmingly at the heart of viewing, with 98.5% watching this way.

The other 1.5% of TV viewing was on other screens, such as tablets and PCs.

Linear viewing, that is, watching TV at the time of broadcast rather than using catch-up services, also fell. On average, each person watch three hours, 52 minutes of linear TV on a TV set in 2013, against 4 hours and 1 minute the year before.

Barb expects this year's football World Cup in Brazil to boost linear viewing.

Commercial TV increased its share of linear viewing from 66% to 68%.

Barb estimates that the average TV viewer watched 47 adverts a day - four ads more per day than five years ago.
