While the move to become the legal guardian of her granddaughter may appear like a drastic move, a source close to the Walker family revealed the teenager had already been living with her grandmother, even before Paul died.
Meadow moved to Los Angeles from Hawaii three years before the actor's death to get to know her father better. Due to his hectic work schedule though, insiders have revealed, Paul asked his mother to care for the teenager three months before his death.
At the time Cheryl was working as a nurse, however days before his death Paul reportedly asked her to quit her job to look after Meadow after the nannies he'd employed hadn't worked out, TMZ reports.
Sources close to the star claim his family were informed of the decision for Cheryl to care full time for his daughter.
In his will, Walker stated that he wanted his mother to become legal guardian of any children should be pass away, so the petition isn't that much of a surprise.
According to E!News while the subject of guardianship had been raised, Meadow and her mother Rebecca were surprised about the petition and found out via news sites that it had taken place.
''Everyone was taken by surprise," an insider said.
"This has been hard on everyone close to them. [Meadow and her mom] didn't know. There have been discussions but no one told them they were going ahead with it. They first heard about it when they saw it on TMZ. They are very disgusted by this. It is such disregard for their feelings.''
