Avengers' Joss Whedon Bucks The Trend And Releases New Movie Online After Premiere
Avengers director Joss Whedon might be able to bank billions at the box office but for his latest movie, he's tried a different approach.
The director has suprised his fans by releasing his new movie online in conjunction with the movie's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Whedon, who made $1.5bn at the international box office with Avengers, has now made In Your Eyes available to rent for just $5. This is a second release from Whedon's 'micro studio', Bellweather Pictures, after last year's Much Ado About Nothing.
Of his decision to release the movie straight away, he said according to the BBC: "It's exciting for us because we get to explore yet another new form of distribution - and we get $5."
According to reports, Whedon recorded a message to be aired at the Tribeca Film Festival, where he said that the screening was "not just the premiere of the film - it is the worldwide release date because, as of now, In Your Eyes is available on any internet-capable device".
The movie, which stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David, tells a supernatural love story of strangers who believe that they share a telepathic connection, and is now available to rent on video streaming site, Vimeo.
"This is the most high profile title we've had on the platform, definitely," the company's Greg Clayman told Gigaom.
"The fact that people like Joss are starting to think about direct distribution and connecting directly with their fans is exciting for us, and a trend we think will continue."
"I like the surprise element," he added of the movie's unconventional release. "It's a non-traditional way, for sure, but hey, it works for Beyonce."
