Oscars 2014: Oprah Winfrey Snubbed For The Butler In Year Of Predictable Nominations

In a year that didn't throw up too many surprises, the 2014 Oscars main snub was Oprah Winfrey, who failed to win a nod for The Butler.

The former talk show queen returned to the big screen with Lee Daniels' The Butler in a critcially acclaimed performance after a 15 year absence.

Back in 1985 the star was nominated for her role in The Color Purple but this year she's missed out entirely. In fact the White House drama failed to pick up any nods despite performing well at the box office worldwide and a star turn from Forest Whitaker.

While this year's nominations proved to be quite a predictable affair with 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Gravity leading across the major categories, movies like Inside Llewyn Davis failed to get a look in.

The Cohen brothers' latest may have been the Grand Prix winner at last year's Cannes Film Festival but it has tailed off since awards season hit, missing out on the 10 possible Best Picture spots.

Acting heavyweights Tom Hanks and Robert Redford also lost out to more up and coming stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and heavily tipped names like Leonardo DiCaprio for Wolf of Wall Street. Britain's Idris Elba was also missing from the highly competitive Best Actor category despite his critically acclaimed role in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.;

The 2014 Academy Awards will take place on March 2 with Ellen DeGeneres hosting the star-studded show for a second time.
