The Voice: Round Two Of The Battles Is Over But The War Is Far From Finished

Throat lozenges at the ready: the battle rounds of The Voice are well underway, and they're as fierce as ever. Twenty-four wannabe music acts tried their hand at singing for success in the ring – but only half were destined to make the cut. It was an intense show, with rock voices taking on soulful falsettos and potential pop icons going head-to-head with gritty serenaders in a bid to make it through to the knockouts.

Chris Vs Jamie: Rolling In The Deep
Helped by Katy B, Ricky pitted a serpent against a lion this week, gazing on in awe as soulful Chris and rock god Jamie belted out the Adele classic. "They gave every last drop of energy, it was intense to watch," said Katy – and that was just in the piano rehearsals. "It's power versus emotion – it's like choosing between space and the ocean," said a torn Ricky. "It's the toughest decision I've made so far because I know how much they both want it…"
Winner? Chris

Rachael Vs Amelia: Holy Grail
"It's hard being a 16-year-old girl, you can see their emotions are brimming," contemplated Kylie as she and battle advisor, Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears, threw youngsters Rachael and Amelia into the battle ring. The pair did a gentle, toned down version of Jay Z's Holy Grail, impressing all four of the coaches. Tom said the performance was fantastic, while Kylie admitted wanting to back out of making the decision.
Winner? Rachael

Kiki Vs James: Because The Night
Will.i.am recruited Black Eyed Peas co-founder Dante Santiago and last year's Voice finalist Leah McFall to help him prepare his team members. And the first coupling? Painfully shy James and extrovert burlesque singer Kiki. "They're more than just great singers, they're the whole package," said Will, struggling so much with the decision that he paused the arena to take a toilet break: "I just needed to clear my head."
Winner? James

Melissa Vs Vicky: Just Give Me A Reason
Never in a million years could this reviewer imagine Tinie Tempah and Tom Jones in the same room, let alone advising each other on musical matters. That's why The Voice is so amazing! The pair put Amy Winehouse super-fan Melissa and Vicky Jones (Danny from McFly's sister) together to sing P!nk's Just Give Me A Reason. A fitting choice we reckon, as they both had pink hair. "Two remarkable performances and a great song choice," said Ricky and Tom added: "You both did a great job. It's so close, honestly."
Winner? Melissa

Miles Vs Max: Eleanor Rigby
Painfully shy Miles and confident fighting champ Max went head-to-head to perform their take on this Beatles classic, guitars-in tow. It was a tough choice for the Kaiser Chiefs front-man, but in the end he followed his reckless streak to add Max to his team: "He is so freewheeling, he's never the same twice. It's kind of dangerous – which is why I like it."
Winner? Max

Sophie May Vs Cherri: Love Cats
There was some seriously swinging scatting when Sophie May and Cherri took on The Cure classic, Love Cats – hoping to continue on Team Will. "Two incredible performances. If I had a steal left, I wouldn't care who you [Will] put through, I'd have the other one," said Ricky. Will was so confused over who to pick that he started throwing wordplay around the ring: "Cherri you're like a Cherri on top and Sophie you became Sophisticated."
Winner? Sophie

Jamie Vs Joe: Counting Stars
It's the first Voice bromance: Irish dancer Joe and professional singer Jamie. If any couple deserved to go through as a duo, this was it. Bringing out the best in each other to impress coach Kylie, the pair rocked One Republic's Counting Stars. "They really are neck and neck," said the tearful pint-sized pop judge. "I'm shaking, I'm literally shaking with excitement and nerves." Her decision wasn't aided by comments from her fellow coaches either. "During this competition some of the battles were quite fierce but you had a certain amount of humility," said Ricky. "I really feel like you've made each other better."
Winner? Jamie

Iesher Vs Femi: Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)
Soulful Iesher and Obama look-a-like Femi could've made a double act with their beautiful duet. Coach Will was blown away: "I should never have put you guys together!" His comrades felt the same too: "I know Diana Ross fairly well," name-dropped Tom. "I must say this: Iesher brought something fresh, which wasn't there before. The two of you together was really something. It made for a great duet." Kylie added that the harmonies were "delicious". And although Will picked Iesher – arguing that there was no-one in the competition to compare her with – Kylie used her last steal to take Femi forward on her team: "He was my number one!"
Winner? Iesher

Leverne Vs Georgia: 22
Tension exploded in the ring today when Georgia and mum-of-four Leverne fought for a place in the knockout stages. "The two girls are very competitive: I think they both want it desperately," said their coach Tom. "I've made it difficult for myself because I've put two great singers together." Aussie pop princess Kylie offered her advice to the Welsh singer: "You both did a great job but I would lean towards Georgia for that performance."
Winner? Georgia

Gemyni Vs Jade: Baby One More Time Sassy Jade outgunned twin-act Gemyni with her belting notes, proving that double power isn't everything – especially when you've got such a good song choice. The singer held her own against the double act in a bid to gain the last spot on Team Kylie.
Winner? Jade

Gary Vs Elesha: Caught Up
R'n'B superstar Usher would've been proud of Gary and Elesha as they brought the house down with their rendition of Caught Up. Gobsmacked Will exclaimed: "That was spectacular, that song is hard to sing." It left coach Tom with a hard choose to make though: "I wish you could sing together all the time, it would suit me fine. And then I wouldn't have to make a decision."
Winner? Gary

Luciee Vs Jazz: Grenade
The final battle of the night was a feisty, firey one – fought with a Grenade of course. Luciee and Jazz both have unique voices and made the Bruno Mars track their own. Undecided Ricky looked to the other judges for advice, but all three admitted it was an impossible choice. "Frankly, I wish I had a steal," said Kylie, with Will describing the performance as "freaking awesome".
Winner? Jazz
